Recap of JUGsNightOut

On Monday, a fabulous group of bloggers, friends, and entrepreneurs gathered at Shake the Tree in Boston's North End to celebrate a night out hosted by your's truly! We had an absolute blast shopping at our favorite clothing, jewelry, and decor boutique while sipping on sangria and munching on arancini from Bacco, quesadillas from Urban Cantina, wraps from Going Bananas, and sweets from Bread + Butter (yeah, we definitely exceeded our calorie goal for the day, sorry PactApp)! And we know that shopping can be stressful sometimes (hmmm should I get two of these cute stackable rings, or three?!?!?!?!!!)...luckily, Exhale was there to provide back massages and mini reflexology sessions.

It was a full house, and it was great to see some of our fellow Boston Bloggers in the mix, including Annie White, Boston Day Book, Danielle KempeDear FriendElizabeth Swartz, Faith Towers DesignFeathers and Stripes, Fenway Fashionista, Lifestyle of a FashionistaNotes on Lifestyle by Georgina, Prim & Propah, Rentwhich, and I am probably missing a bunch more (please let me know in the comments)!

We had so much fun that we already have some plans in the works for another event! Check back for details.

Book Club Discussion Questions: Black Mass

via
  1. Grade the book, A-F
  2. What are your overall impressions of the FBI after reading this book?
  3. What were some of the pros and cons of Gerard K. O'Neill and Dick Lehr's writing styles?
  4. Bulger notably befriended many in the South Boston community and beyond.  How do you think he covered the bases with informants in training them to follow his methods of madness?
  5. Connolly was essentially enamored with Bulger and his artful ways.  If you were him as a young agent, would you feel the same way?  Why or why not?
  6. As we know, the Showtime show, Ray Donovan, is based on the life of Whitey.  What similarities/differences do you notice between that and Black Mass as two interpretations of his life?
  7. Do you think any parts of the book would have been written differently if it had been written after Whitey was caught or put on trial?
  8. Has Whitey's story and reputation been glamorized?
  9. Do you think the city and state are still corrupt? If not, what has changed about our city's culture in the past 20 years to prevent these situations?
  10. A lot of Whitey & Flemmi's schemes had to do with gambling and betting; Do you think a new casino in Everett would open up the area to similar racketeering schemes in the coming years?
  11. Do you think informants influenced by Whitey are still out there living a lie?
  12. What is one thing about Boston you learned from this book that you didn't know before?
via
Think we're psyched for the movie next year, or what?!

For more updated information on Bulger after he was found and last summer's trial, be sure to catch the CNN special on Whitey, too (we'll be watching it tonight at book club)!

Daily Read: Date Eats

Us JUGs have respect for sarcasm and it always feels like a win when you find others that feel the same way.  When I came across the blog DateEats last week, I was instantly hooked and immediately read each post.  As someone in the singles "scene," dating opinions tend to be heavy since it is a pretty serious topic.  The (anonymous?) author of DateEats, however, refreshingly sheds some humor on dating in Boston.

The author, "Chief" also rates restaurants in recommending them as date venues for his readers, which is always helpful advice, especially for a first date, in addition to remembering this. Other favorite tips of mine are here, here and here, great examples of why manners are so important and valued.  I had to laugh reading this, because this happened to me on a first date and was one of the main reasons why I didn't want to see the guy again (don't get my wrong, I respect getting a bargain, but the mention of the discount 4x was overkill).

Now, I have to wonder, with the blog continuing, "Chief" must still be single, right?!  Even if he's been scooped up, let's hope the snarky reviews and recommendations keep coming!  With all of the North End mentions, it's tough to find something I do not like about this blog.  Whether you need ideas on where to dine, or a guy's perspective on the beast that is dating, or simply want a laugh, bookmark it today!

Who's That Gal: Jennifer Phelan

Please tell us a little about your background and how you found yourself in the world of fitness today.
I grew up in upstate New York and was involved in dancing since age three. I went to Northeastern University for journalism which was totaly unrelated to fitness. When I had to get a work-study job, I saw a flyer in the gym with a photo of a girl that had a wireless mic on. It said ‘get certified to be a fitness teacher.’ This was the time around when Britney Spears was cool, so I was like perfect, dance around a room with a microphone on, this is totally up my alley. I auditioned, got the job and my certification to teach. I started freshman year and continued throughout college teaching everything from hip-hop to aerobics type stuff.

Teaching dance and fitness felt very natural to me. I grew up in the studio, so it felt great and I kept meeting wonderful people in my classes. After college I did what you were supposed to do, I got a 9-5 job, but kept teaching on the side. I ended up teaching so much that I was even teaching before and after work and I was working almost 80 hours a week. I spent 3 years in the marketing department of a law firm and then one day I decided it was time to make the leap. I quit my job, started teaching full time, and never looked back.

Starting your own business is the “American dream,” but takes a lot of work. Can you tell us about the process you went through to get your teacher’s license and how you built your client base / reputation to what it is now?

Don’t get me wrong, quitting my job was scary. I’d never quit anything in my entire life and it was a secure job. I had benefits, a steady paycheck and I thought that was what you were supposed to do. But, I was lucky and I knew it was meant to be when the next day I had a meeting with Lululemon and they asked me to be an ambassador.

The key thing about starting a business is being dedicated and passionate about what you are doing. People don’t realize that how much work it is. I know there are folks who think I just wear spandex and sneakers everyday and bop around from class to class. But there is obviously a lot more to it.

The business of fitness has evolved over the past few years. When I started, people didn’t need to promote themselves the way they do now. Now, social media is a huge part of the job and everyone has a website, Facebook page and more. From the start, I was really set on creating a brand for myself and I was oversharing the details of my life because people seemed really interested in it. I created a Facebook page and just started posting all the time. Things progressed very naturally. Now everyone is doing that and you really have to stay on top of your game to reach your audience.

It took me a while to build my following but I have been doing it for 5 years and I’ve been putting in the effort. I don’t think all new instructors realize that it takes time, you don’t just start with 1,000 followers off the bat. Scheduling, emailing, marketing, updating your website, blogging and social media are all a huge part of your job as well.

To keep people interested, I try to go against the grain, and find new ways to market myself besides adding more noise on your mini-feeds. Free events used to be a rarity, but now they are the norm so I have to be constantly figuring out the next thing.

What has been the greatest business challenge you have encountered to date and who do you turn to for advice when challenges arise?

The hardest thing is that I’m doing this on my own. I’ve had assistants in the past that were really great. They were my right hand people, helping with events and such. But I don’t have my own studio or enough money to pay people to always help me. So I have to work hard to find the work-life balance that works for me.

Flexibility is a double edge sword. I have to plan around my own schedule and my clients’. Around the holidays and in the summer clients are on vacations and it’s great that I can take time off too, but I have to plan ahead because during that time off I’m not getting paid. And now I have a baby which is another story.

On that note, what’s the best career advice you’ve received? What advice would you give to a young woman looking to follow in your footsteps?

The best advice I’ve received was from my father who told me you have to love what you’re doing. I was really young and scared when I was thinking of quitting my office job and I was afraid to tell my parents. My parents have always been super supportive and that gave me the courage to give it a try and they totally supported me because they saw how happy I was when I was teaching.

If I had to give advice to someone else I’d say just go for it! Life is too short to spend it sitting behind a desk wishing you were doing something else. If it’s meant to be it will work out and if it doesn’t so what? You learned something and you can move on to something else. Take risks.

Over the past few months a lot has changed in your personal life- you just became a new mommy! How has parenthood changed your role as a pilates instructor and business woman?

It puts things into perspective and you really have to prioritize when managing your time. I’m still trying to figure everything out and I don’t know that I will ever have everything figured out. It’s funny because before I thought I would just bounce back into shape - physically and emotionally, but right now I’m learning the challenge of juggling my son’s life, my life, my family life and my business.

Motherhood is crazy - I have so much more respect for moms now. The things you go through physically and emotionally, the way you feel about yourself and your body before and after childbirth is something you can’t prepare yourself for. I’m very lucky that I have met a group of mothers that have become a new support system for me.

This group of new friends  actually inspired me to create programs for moms where they can feel comfortable about getting back in shape. In my new mommy classes you can work out with your baby and no matter what your baby does during the class it’s ok because we are all in the same boat.

Aside from Pilates, what are some best practices you recommend to clients to live a better, more purposeful life

I’m by no means a nutritionist but I’d say along with working out, the best thing you can do is being aware of what you are putting in your body. I am all for everything in moderation, I’m not into crazy diets or anything, but eating clean is important. Just make sure what you are eating is real. You can’t eat crap.

I grew up like everyone else, not totally aware that processed stuff was bad. But now that we are so much more aware of that as a society, it’s great that we know that a balanced diet can really change your day - change your focus, your energy and everything else. When you feel good about yourself you are more capable of good things. Make time for yourself, eat healthy.

How has the culture of Boston influenced your business and fitness choices? (We love your free workshops!)

I’m here because this where I went to school and I had a great community of friends that stayed here. My community has also continued to grow over the years and I’ve met so many wonderful people through my classes.

Even though Boston is a big city, everyone is so supportive. The Pilates community is so strong and all the fitness instructors are friends. It’s really evolved and I’ve loved watching it grow. We all have our own style but we’re all in it together.

What’s even cooler is that Boston has become such a fitness city, so as a fitness instructor that’s very exciting

What’s next for JP Pilates?

I always have something up my sleeve! I always want to do more, I have big goals, big dreams and with time they will happen. Until then I want to keep you in suspense! What I can tell you is that I am definetly going to incorporate more classes for mothers.

JPPilates is always growing and evolving along with my life. For example when I was getting married I was doing a lot of workouts that focused on brides because I knew how stressful getting ready for the big day was. Now I am changing my focus a little bit to group in a lot more options for moms and moms to be.

BUT, don’t worry, this does not mean I am only doing mommy stuff.  I’m still cool, sort of! All I can say is I know I’m not teaching a lot right now as I am figuring out this new mom-life, but this fall I will be back and I will be offering a lot more for each and everyone of you.

I am here to stay, there’s no getting rid of me Boston!

Local Ideas for Dad's Big Day

Ummmm Father's Day is on Sunday....yeah...THIS Sunday. Luckily for us, Boston has some awesome last-min gifts to offer, like Bully Boy White Whiskey (its clear...sorry...wrong photo above) which is available in most liquor stores, but is special because it is distilled right in Boston and is USDA certified organic. If your dad is more of a beer drinker, treat him to a locally brewed six pack of Plum Island Belgian White. It is the perfect summer beer...you should probably ask dad to share with you upon opening!

If your father is a foodie, a gift certificate to Karl's Sausage Kitchen in Peabody would be perfect! Their gourmet European market has everything you need for a summer BBQ. Plus, Karl's can deliver your gift certificate within 24 hours --- whew! Another idea, of course, is to cook for dad yourself. Try out this Whiskey Caramel Bacon Bark recipe. I know this one is 100% dad-approved because my dad is the one who sent me this recipe!

Finally, there is the old standby: Red Sox tickets. Our boys may not be doing so well this season, but there is really nothing like going to Fenway with your dad.

Happy Father's Day gals!

Local Gem: Assembly Row, Somerville

via

Boston is a-changin', gals!  As someone who loves watching real estate developments, I find the Assembly Row project in Somerville especially exciting.  Somerville has generally been a place for Bostonians to dabble in trendy restaurants, bars and the arts, but it will soon be a shopping destination!  Avalon Bay Communities has created a "minicity" of sorts for housing, too, complete with an AMC theater steps away from shops and eateries.  I'll be honest, I'm most looking forward to hitting up J.Crew, LOFT, Nike and Saks outlets.  A few years ago, it was just a pipe dream to be able to visit outlet stores without use of a car, but now we have Assembly Row right in our backyard, soon-to-be accessible by T (the efficient Orange Line)!   Store openings are happening this weekend through fall 2014.  Which spot are you most looking forward to visiting?

Kate Spade Saturday, Boston

One of our favorite sites in NYC last summer was the Kate Spade Saturday "shop."  It was a new kind of retail experience, where you walked up to a window and ordered items that were delivered to you (wherever you were in the city!) via bike messenger within the hour.  It's no wonder that the brand has been growing so quickly.

Well, as of this past weekend, KS Saturday is now here, as in, IN the Pru!  No doubt the easygoing vibe in their products has been brought to the brick and mortar store, we can't wait to check it out, Saturday or not!

ArtWeek Boston

Looking for new or cultural activities to participate in this weekend? Starting tomorrow you can get your art on with ArtWeek Boston, the biannual celebration of the arts, cultural and creative communities of Boston. From April 25th to May 4th you can experience a wide array of uniquely curated experiences including ballet workshops, insider studio tours, outdoor exhibitions, music-inspired dining and more.

My top picks include:

Anita Kurl Hair Salon will host a couture hairstyling showcase featuring high fashion styles on models, as well as a limited number of exclusive of ArtWeek guests.

The rug on the floor and the art on the walls are often the most expensive investment in your home. We often know what we like, but do you really understand why these exquisite pieces are priced the way they are and whether you are making a sound investment? Experts Mahmud Jafri and Jacqui Becker will reveal the art of how to purchase fine art and fine rugs; what drives their prices and how to make an educated investment in pieces that will last a lifetime.

Celebrate the official launch of ArtApp Boston+, a free mobile application that ushers in a new era of art exploration in Boston and beyond. This event is open to the public, but tracking down the location is part of the fun – check for weekly clues on Facebook.com/ArtAppBoston.

Attending one or more event at ArtWeek Boston? Share your posts with us and the event sponsors by using the hashtag #myartweek.

Baseball Babes

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9

The Red Sox roster is lookin' pretty steamy this season. First there's Miller, who has a mess of facial hair but, Boston girls are into it, duh. Next up is boy-next-door Daniel Nava...I mean, those photos speak for themselves. Then, haha, Sizemore.....turns out this guy is really into taking nude selfies, so don't google-image-stalk him at work.

oh wait......there's more:

The new guy, Ryan Roberts is perf for ladies that love tattoos. His nickname on the Diamondbacks was Tatman. And finally, Bogaerts is on our watchlist for "cuties of the future" because he is only 21!

So, see ya at Fenway? Thought so.

Spring Skin Savers

Ever since meeting the lovely founder of Follain, the South End's eco-beauty boutique, the JUGs have been working hard to detoxify our skincare. As someone that's prone to the occasional zit, I've spent years applying all sorts of chemicals to my skin in order to keep "clear." Of course, I've recently discovered that non-toxic  remedies are not only healthier and better for the environment, they actually work better! Here is my secret recipe for truly clear skin:

1. First, rinse your face with warm water to open your pores. Then, use a cotton ball to apply Clairvoyant Beauty Refreshing Cucumber Toner. Though this product has not yet been rated (NR) by our favorite healthy beauty resources, The SkinDeep Database and GoodGuide, we know it is safe because we've checked the ingredients with the SkinDeep list, and everything looks good! (Note: be wary of any food or skin product that has ingredients that you don't recognize or can't pronounce).

2. Treat problem areas with OSEA Essential Corrective Complex. I am obsessed with this product. Not only is it a 0 on the SkinDeep database (no hazard), it smells amazing, and is highly effective.

3. If you are going somewhere soon and need to make huge zit look as small as possible before heading out, the miracle cure is the most natural of all: ice. Ice that bad boy for 15 - 20 minutes to help the swelling go down before applying makeup.

4. Especially if you are using products like toners and astringents (step 1), you'll need to moisturize. If you don't, your skin will go into overdrive and create excess oil to make up for the natural oils you removed with the toner. To battle this dilemma is Shamanuti Face Oil. Tara Foley, the founder and owner of Follain, recommends this product for people with "oily" skintypes. It is particularly good for acne-prone skin because it has sential fatty acids that help protect skin against infection and inflammation caused by bacteria. BONUS: Shamanuti is a Boston-based company!!!

5. The final step, of course, is to cover up the zit! RMS Uncover Up is the perfect chemical-free way to achieve a flawless face. The main ingredient is coconut oil, and the SkinDeep Database rated this product a 3 (no hazard). Impressively, RMS has received GoodGuide's highest rating of 10 because they don't use any ingredients in their products that could be considered health concerns.

Voila, now you have better skin than Natalie Portman. P.S. Don't forget the sunscreen!

Week of March 24

1

S P R I N G

Finally!!!!! Even though its not thaaaat warm yet, it may be time to start stocking up on sandals, sunglasses, and sunscreen. And, eeeek, maybe its also time to do a little spring cleaning? Here is some help to get that process started:

Oh, and ladies, don't forget to do your taxes!

M U S I C

So much is going on in Boston's music scene. After discovering Bearstronaut at We Are Music in February, the JUGs are hooked on their "tank top pop" sound. The awesome news is that they are having a show tomorrow night at TT and the Bears and tickets are only $9!

Also, keep your eyes peeled for tickets to the Hall & Oates show at the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion (formerly the Bank of America Pavilion) this June. It is sure to be an epic show.

JUGs fav Lana Del Rey is also playing a show soon. You can find her at the House of Blues on May 6th

N E T W O R K

If you're on the job hunt, or just need some inspiration, there are a bunch of great networking events happening around this week. The BOS Lady Project is hosting a game of "networking bingo" at Whiskey Priest tomorrow night. This event should be great for those who have a little trouble coming out of their shell.

On Wednesday, Lux & Concord is hosting cocktails, shopping, and mingling at Cyntha Rowley on Newbury St. This might be the perfect time to pick up a cocktail dress for wedding season.

If you're into sports, maybe the #SBWeek Boston Sports Business Networking event on Tuesday is more your speed.

E A T S

This is the second week of Dine Out Boston! The JUGs are planning to check out Capital Grille, but there are tons of other options on the list. Did you go out last week? If so, would you recommend that restaurant?

We also can't wait to check out the South End's new hotspot, Merrill & Co. - gotta love a good raw bar!

W H A T ? !

By now you've all heard that Kimye is the cover of Vogue's April issue. Vom.

Luckily, there are also some good things going on in the world. Like, how these are probably the last few weeks you'll ever have to take a cab because the T will soon run until 3 am! And that Pharrell is now a warrior for eco-fasion. And that we can FINALLY buy a pair of white jeans! Life. is. good.

Have a great week!

Self-Defense Tips for the City Gal

via
Living in a city is an exciting part of adulthood!  We should not let anyone threaten this for us.  With unfortunate reminders like the tragedy of Amy Lord's kidnapping last year and recent sexual assaults in the North End involving unknown perpetrators leaves us feeling anything but safe.  Common sense tells us that you need to be aware of your surroundings when heading home, but there is a harsh difference of a work night vs. a night out.

via

We need to remember that prevention is really the best self-defense.  Before you get over-confident in thinking you know what you're doing after watching a few videos, or took martial arts as a kid, get familiar with the harsh reality that an actual class is the way to go.  Lucky for us, there are a lot of options in the Boston area!

Are there any other resources you can share?  What do you think is the best method of self-defense?

Who's That Gal: Summer Forest Hoeckel

We are so glad that Summer Forest relocated her East Coast home from New York to Boston last year. (She also has a home in Los Angeles). Not only does she plan epic, mission-oriented concerts with her brand, We Are  Music,  she is also  brings  to the table an incredible background in media production, magazine editing, and even electronic music.  The JUGs were thrilled to sit down with this former-raver and jill-of-all-trades at Sweetgreen on Boyleston St. to talk about how Bostonians can use music to reduce human impact on climate change.

Tell us a little bit about We Are Music. What are you hoping to accomplish with this brand?

We Are Music is the platform I am using to put together a series of climate change awareness concerts and music festivals around the country - with a big focus on Boston and Los Angeles. Our first show was in February and featured  musical acts including Escort, Bearstronaut, DJ Ryan Brown and DJ Juan MacLean. We were also honored to have some really prestigious climate change speakers including Michael Mann, Cameron Wake, Jack Healy, and Dan Schrag. It was such a fun night that got a really wide variety of people involved in the issue.

Why do you think music is such a good method for inspiring political and social action?

Music is the universal language. Its accessible to all people and draws them together, especially young people. I’ve been going to music festivals, pretty obsessively, for almost 20 years, and it is part of my lifestyle. I've seen that music is a great way to bring people together for a larger cause. From Tibetan Freedom Concerts to Live Aid, there is a long, inspiring history of music and causes being paired in a very powerful way.

Its also a great way to reach young people. Electronic music is definitely my preferred medium for We Are Music. EDM is so massive and kids pretty much worship these artists. Not only do kids trust the ideas of their music idols, the artists themselves want to use their platform to do something good. I had a conversation with one of the biggest artists in EDM last year, and he was so in to the concept of putting EDM to work for making positive change in the world, and wanted to know what he could do to help. He, and so many other artists, managers, agents and promoters around the country want to contribute. So now, I am trying to cobble together this movement of Climate Change awareness through electronic music.

So, why electronic music, of all genres?

Electronic music in its early days was all about peace, love, unity, respect. Everyone - freaks, geeks, and oddballs- all had their place in the electronic music world. And thats why EDM has gotten so big: because “inclusion” is really in its DNA. Its easy for people to find their place in it. Sure, the genre has gotten more commercial over the years, but the essential principles are still there. This is the formula for people to get involved. The key to solving climate change is recognizing that we are all in it together, and this can be a powerful path.

What sparked your interest and passion for climate change action?

This is the issue of our time. This is it. Its right there in front of us. Its hard to talk about it without sounding cliche because it's so obvious. For me, this issue also reeks of opportunity. I get excited because I believe this is our generation’s version of the Peace Movement and the Civil Rights Movement. This is the moment for people power and to take to the streets for an issue we care about. Its exciting to think how people might come together over Climate Change. Rallying around big positive change really makes people feel a sense of purpose in their lives. And if they can do it in a context of joy and togetherness it’s all that more life-affirming.

Are you a musician?

Haha, no. I occasionally DJ, but mostly, I am a dancer.

Best concert or social/political event you’ve ever been to?

The Tibetan Freedom Concerts are really close to my heart. I’m a practicing Buddhist, and Tibetan Freedom is a really important cause for me. I also love Burning Man - it is the epitome of human beings just being awesome. I’ve been 8 years in a row!

Favorite Boston hangout?

I live in Cambridge so most of my hangouts are there, though I’d love to explore other parts of the city.

 Last book you read?

This is hard because I’m always reading 3 or 4 books at a time! But one of the main books I’m drawing inspiration from right now is Joanna Macy’s World as Lover, World as Self: Courage for Global Justice and Ecological Renewal

That's all for this month's installment of Who's That Gal. We can't wait to go to We Are Music's next event!

The Boys Are (Almost) Back

Yes, we agree... it has been an extremely long winter.  Anyone who knows me well is aware that I LOVE baseball season.  Every new season sparks this refreshed attitude full of excitement, hope and competition.  Plus, a night at Fenway just makes it all that more special.  Our home opener this year is Friday, April 4th, less than one month away!  I am already counting down the days for the boys to be back in town!

Check out other spring training photos under #BoysAreBack.  Don't forget our posts on game-worthy outfits and Fenway bars from our archives!
