Recap of JUGsNightOut

On Monday, a fabulous group of bloggers, friends, and entrepreneurs gathered at Shake the Tree in Boston's North End to celebrate a night out hosted by your's truly! We had an absolute blast shopping at our favorite clothing, jewelry, and decor boutique while sipping on sangria and munching on arancini from Bacco, quesadillas from Urban Cantina, wraps from Going Bananas, and sweets from Bread + Butter (yeah, we definitely exceeded our calorie goal for the day, sorry PactApp)! And we know that shopping can be stressful sometimes (hmmm should I get two of these cute stackable rings, or three?!?!?!?!!!)...luckily, Exhale was there to provide back massages and mini reflexology sessions.

It was a full house, and it was great to see some of our fellow Boston Bloggers in the mix, including Annie White, Boston Day Book, Danielle KempeDear FriendElizabeth Swartz, Faith Towers DesignFeathers and Stripes, Fenway Fashionista, Lifestyle of a FashionistaNotes on Lifestyle by Georgina, Prim & Propah, Rentwhich, and I am probably missing a bunch more (please let me know in the comments)!

We had so much fun that we already have some plans in the works for another event! Check back for details.

We are excited to join our friends over at Follain on Thursday evening for their event with Snap Top Market. Hope to see you there!

Many times, beauty comes from the inside out, and we are loving The Skeptic's Guide to Meditation as a way to get started on a mindset makeover.

And....what the eff is raw shampoo?

G O A L S

This post from The Kitchn is a serious wallet saver - 10 Tips for Creating a Grocery Budget and Sticking to It. They're also teaching us how to cook our favorite fall vegetables.

And now that we've gotten a sneak preview of how awesome Society of Grownups is, we are definitely going to sign up for our financial checkups at their Brookline office - the first is free!

Oh ya,  don't forget to order Goldfinch from the library for this month's book club

P A R T Y

We are thrilled that #JUGsNightOut sold out in two days - but if you didn't get tickets, definitely get on the waitlist in case extra spaces open up. Also, our after party is going to be at a TBD North End location. We just got the news that Goody Glover's is closing and can't host us that night, sadly.

Have a great week.

Week of March 3

Its finally March! Spring is JUST around the corner (we hope)!

E N T E R T A I N M E N T

Did you all see the Oscars last night? Ellen did a fab job hosting as usual, and it was great to see our fav stars decked out in their finest. I particularly loved Cate Blanchett's dress. Lupita's sky blue gown also looked gorg against her skin. Did you have any favorites of the night?

G R E E N

Eco-themed events are happening left & right this week! Most importantly, the NESEA Building Energy Conference and Trade Show is Tuesday - Thursday in the Seaport. I am pumped to see the EPA's Gina McCarthy speak and the conference. Also, on Tuesday is this month's meeting of the Boston Area Sustainability Group in Kendall Sq. The topic of the month is food systems - should be an informative and thought provoking event. Finally, on Saturday, our favorite cosmetics & body shop, Follain, is holding a Meet the Maker event with featured brand Shamanuti.

A R O U N D  T O W N

At some point before May, it is essential to get to the MFA to see the museum's much-buzzed-about Boston Loves Impressionism exhibit. Once it gets warm out, a museum will seem less appealing, so we suggest going now while being indoors is still preferable!

On Thursday evening, one of our favorite boutiques, Shake the Tree, is hosting a Cocktail Party Fundraiser for the Friends of Maiti Nepal. Free massages, cocktails, and appetizers? Count us in!

But if that sounds to low key for you, check out the Deep Eddy Cranberry Launch Party, which is also on Thursday at Kings. Should be a great way to get a head start on the weekend.

P L A N  A H E A D

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner .... maybe its time to tell your boss that you'll be out "sick" on March 17, since the epic Southie celebration is on the 16th.

Dine Out Boston (formerly known as Restaurant Week) starts on March 16 as well! Yum, I can't wait to make some reservations at restaurants I normally couldn't afford.

Have a great week!

Recap: Fall for Madewell

This past Wednesday night, I hosted an event with one of my favorite stores, Madewell.  Being the sister store to J.Crew, it is nearly impossible for me to pass by without stopping in when strolling down Newbury Street.  This event was a great chance for a selected few to get their newest designs on a dime!  I was able to craft the guest list to allow for intimate shopping among friends.  And, to compliment the retail experience, the store treated everyone to manicures as well as fall-inspired maple bite-sized cupcakes from neighbor Georgetown Cupcake!

I ended up with a great season-to-season staple, recommended by one of Madewell's tasteful in-store stylists.  There's no doubt I'll have this dress for years to come.  The customer service at this location cannot be beat!

Be on the lookout via twitter for the next event, in the coming months!

BostonFest

This Thursday we will be attending BostInno's BostonFest, a celebration for all those that a) love Boston and b) work hard, play hard. What's not to love about all that? Yes, maybe all networking events aim to have that agenda as well, but if you haven't been to a BostInno event yet, just know that they throw some of the best.
Take this Thursday to try something other than Tia's. Head down to the Seaport and enter your company into the Coolest Company Competition or network your way into one of the top ranked.

Not looking for a new gig? Hang with Cam, Meredith and I as we plan to dominate the giant Jenga game and ladder ball stations in between hitting up the food trucks and drink stations!

This Thursday is going to be a good one so come hang with us at BostonFest!  Get your tickets fast, there's only a few left!

- Suzanne

This post is a sponsored post. Thank you to BostInno for making events like this happen.

Recap: Altitude Summit NYC

Alright gals, we promised we'd dish on Alt Summit so here it is! To be honest I've taken the past few days and still feel as if I am just beginning to digest it all...so bear with me:

First and foremost it was our first Alt Summit and as all the bloggers before us have said, it was an amazing and very educational experience. We met some wonderful bloggers and sponsors and all the speakers were top notch. From Grace (my blogging idol) and her words on Surviving Internet Trends, to Kathleen King's amazing and scary story of Tate's Bake Shop's ups and downs, to the advice on building a relationship with your audience from head of Warby Parker social media, Jennifer Rubio and John Jannuuzzi of Lucky Magazine, they all captivated the audience. And those are just a few of them!

As I'm looking back and trying to put it all together, I think the two most important things I learned from all the speeches were:

1) Build a community
Blogging is a very supportive and community driven industry. The friendships you build will become a safety net and a sounding board for you throughout your endeavors. Seek out people in your same space as well as those you admire or consider way out of your league. Everyone at some point has looked to someone for inspiration, and will probably be willing to lend a hand or send a quick email response. Why not ask that blogger you admire how they got to where they are? Don't be afraid of rejection. Remember, you won't get anywhere without sticking your foot out.

2) Build a relationship with your audience
We as bloggers are nothing without our readers. Find ways to be constantly reaching your readers - yes that means keeping up with technology. We're not saying jump on every tech wave that rolls in, but be conscious of outlets that will make an impact in your sphere like twitter, facebook, pinterest, instagram. Take your readers' input with a grain a salt. That means try and reach their demands but also remember you're human and can't be in 10 places at once.

Those two key points really sum it up for me, though I'm sure we will continue to reference the conference over and over as the summer goes on. We will probably also do another little write up Garance Dore's closing speech soon too, so you won't want to miss that!

Oh and how could I forget Martha! Yes, because the conference was held at Martha Stewart Living's HQ (which was an amazing warehouse space with a roof deck), Martha graced us with her presence. I think my heart stopped for a wee second.

ALT outfit choices (3 of 3)

Just Us Gals: What to Wear to Alt Summit
Alright gals, on to the last person to help pick their outfit!  What should I wear - the breezy but sometimes annoying to keep tucking in blouse with the nautical shorts, or the easy spandex dress with pockets. The Alt Summit is tomorrow so please help me pick asap!

ALT outfit choices (1 of 3)

Today marks the start of a long-awaited week for us JUGs!  Wednesday night, we will be en route to NYC since we have AltSummit on Thursday, held at the Martha Stewart Headquarters (eeeek!).  We obtained these tickets back in the winter, and have been counting down ever since.

Later this week we'll update you on our agenda, but for now, we're focusing on packing.  Thursday will be a full day of networking and intriguing seminars, so we need to dress comfortably.  An outfit that can take us from day to night is also key.  Between today and Wednesday, we'll be presenting outfit options for you to help us choose!

First up...

Which of these jewel-toned inspired looks should I wear?

JUGs Jams, Spring Mix

Well, we're finally in the midst of spring weather!  This means the start of deck/backyard parties BBQs and more.  I created a playlist from some of my favorite jams recently that I've been listening to at work to pass the day (pausing when the phone rings, of course).  Most of these will sure to be included at our next event.  You can listen via Spotify.

Comment if you have a new favorite we should know about!  Happy Friday!

What to Bring on a Train to NYC

Only 4 hours away from Boston, New York City has proved to be one of the most favorite weekend destinations for us JUGs. While we'd all prefer to do some sort of time warp travel there, we all must face the music, aka the dreaded bus or, if we're lucky, the Acela.

This weekend many of us are headed towards the city for the 2nd annual Gold Gala, a benefit put on by our friends for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Whether you're traveling by train or by bus here are a few my "essentials" that I recommend you pack in order to start the weekend off right:

1. Book club reading material - this month we are reading Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food by Paul Greenberg
2. An eco-friendly way to pack multiple magazines in one device
3. Replenishing snacks after a long day at work and something to hold you over till you meet the NYC gals for a late dinner
4. A cozy scarf that can double as as a blanket and a pillow (I love my scarf from Cuyana)
5. Any sort of emergency caffeine to get you through the "Are you here yet? We're all getting ready to go out immediately..." texts
6. Fake it till you make it - a quick make up fix and off you go!

- Suzanne
